Support poorly paid female coffee farmers by supporting Café Femenino
The Café Femenino Foundation was founded in 2004 by Garth and Gay Smith to help the hard working and poorly paid women (and their families) involved in coffee farming. The founders were concerned that these women were poor, uneducated and lived in isolation, all of which contributed to phenomenal rates of abuse. Essentially, they had no rights, socially, politically, or economically.
But the situation is improving, thanks to a wide variety of projects funded by the Café Femenino Foundation in over ten different countries. Typical projects include community gardens, animal breeding programs, health programs, sanitation programs, water projects, income diversification trainings and nutrition training. Overall, poverty levels and the rates of abuse have been reduced, but there is still a huge need for funding.
The Café Femenino foundation is a licensed non-profit organization with no paid staff. All grants are overseen by the Café Femenino Foundation, which works closely with other non-governmental organizations or coffee co-operatives operating in the area where the grant recipients work.
You can get help by making a donation, becoming a volunteer or increasing awareness of the good work done by Café Femenino.
At the corporate level, supporting Café Femenino is a perfect fit for any company with many female customers and a Social Responsibility mandate to help women.
We all love our coffee. Let's show some love for the hard working people at the very bottom of the coffee production chain.
